Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving. Celeste Headlee, 2020

In “Do Nothing,” Celeste Headlee addresses the adverse effects of our relentless pursuit of productivity and optimisation. Despite efforts to enhance our lives, we find ourselves working more, living harder, and becoming increasingly lonely and anxious. Headlee argues that our fixation on efficiency over meaning is misguided and harmful.

The book advocates for a global shift in thinking to prioritise well-being over constant productivity. Headlee draws on history, neuroscience, social science, and paleontology to debunk long-held beliefs about hard work and productivity. She highlights that these detrimental habits are relatively recent in human history and can be broken.

Headlee’s research underscores the importance of taking time for oneself, without the pressure of productivity, to redefine what is truly valuable. By doing less, we can work smarter, achieve more, and ultimately improve our overall happiness and health. The book is a call to action to reclaim our time and well-being by embracing a more balanced and fulfilling way of life.

Beyond Burnout: What to Do When Your Work Isn't Working for You

Beyond Burnout: What to Do When Your Work Isn’t Working for You Amy O’Hana

In “Beyond Burnout,” Amy O’Hana addresses the pervasive issue of vocational burnout, offering hope and solutions for those feeling drained by their work. Drawing on her extensive experience as a mental health expert, O’Hana shares insights from her counselling practice, academic teaching, and personal journey through burnout.

The book emphasises that healing from career exhaustion involves “being” rather than “doing.” O’Hana advocates for reconnecting with God to rejuvenate one’s heart, body, and mind, leading to renewed energy, productivity, and fulfilment. She differentiates vocational stress from depression, outlines the signs of burnout, and explains how to identify them.

O’Hana’s approach centres on receiving God’s love to restore passion and purpose, rather than seeking external fixes. By understanding the root causes of burnout and embracing spiritual restoration, individuals can embark on a path to recovery and rediscover meaning in their careers.

I’m So Effing Tired: A Proven Plan to Beat Burnout, Boost Your Energy and Reclaim Your Life

I’m So Effing Tired: A Proven Plan to Beat Burnout, Boost Your Energy, and Reclaim Your Life. Amy Shah, MD

“I’m So Effing Tired” by Dr. Amy Shah provides a comprehensive plan to combat burnout and boost energy levels, particularly targeting women who feel overworked and exhausted. Dr. Shah, an integrative medical doctor and nutrition expert, draws on her personal wellness journey and scientific research to offer practical solutions for reclaiming vitality.

What You Eat: Emphasises increasing vegetable intake and utilising specific recipes like hormone-balance tea to reduce inflammation and improve gut health, while still enjoying treats like wine and chocolate.
When You Eat: Advocates for intermittent fasting, done correctly, to sustain energy levels throughout the day.
How You Manage Stress: Recommends stress-reducing exercises and herbs, such as Ashwagandha and Amla berry, to support the adrenal system and alleviate anxiety.

Dr. Shah promises noticeable improvements in energy within two weeks and significant overall changes within three months. Her approach is designed to help individuals regain lost energy and return to living a more fulfilling life.

Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle

The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle – Julie de Azevedo Hanks

“Burnout” by Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski explores why women experience burnout differently than men and offers a science-based plan to help women reduce stress, manage emotions, and live more joyfully. This New York Times bestseller addresses the societal pressures and unrealistic expectations placed on women, which often lead to burnout.

The Nagoski sisters provide a compassionate and optimistic approach to overcoming these challenges. They focus on:

Completing the Biological Stress Cycle: Techniques to help the body return to a relaxed state.
Managing Emotional Frustration: Understanding and regulating the brain’s “monitor” that deals with frustration.
Defending Against the Bikini Industrial Complex: Strategies to combat societal pressures about body image.
Keys to Recovery and Prevention: The importance of rest, human connection, and befriending one’s inner critic.

The book includes practical advice, eye-opening science, and helpful worksheets and exercises. It aims to empower women to create positive change without striving for the impossible goal of “having it all.” Instead, it encourages women to embrace their inherent worth and achieve true wellness.

“Burnout” is praised for delivering cutting-edge science with empathy and wit, offering transformative insights for all women seeking to overcome burnout and improve their well-being.

The Lazy Genius Way: Embrace What Matters, Ditch What Doesn't, and Get Stuff Done

The Lazy Genius Way: Embrace What Matters, Ditch What Doesn’t, and Get Stuff Done Kendra Adachi

“The Lazy Genius Way” by Kendra Adachi, a New York Times bestseller, offers a fresh approach to managing life by focusing on what truly matters to the individual. Instead of trying to do more or less, the book encourages readers to be a “genius” about what is important to them and “lazy” about what isn’t.

Adachi, the creator of the Lazy Genius movement, addresses the overwhelming societal expectations and mixed messages about living well. She provides thirteen principles to help readers simplify their lives and focus on personal priorities. These principles include:

Decide Once: Make a decision once and stick to it to reduce decision fatigue.
Start Small: Begin with small steps to create sustainable habits.
Ask the Magic Question: Determine what really matters by asking the right questions.
Go in the Right Order: Prioritise tasks in a logical sequence.
Schedule Rest: Ensure that rest and relaxation are part of the routine.

The book covers practical strategies for various aspects of life, from morning routines to handling relationships and managing tasks. Adachi’s advice aims to help readers navigate their lives without being bogged down by societal “shoulds.” Instead, it empowers them to focus on what is meaningful to them, streamline their efforts, and find balance and joy in their everyday lives.

Doctor’s Wellbeing

Fewer than half of physicians said they were currently somewhat or very happy at work, the new Medscape Physician Lifestyle & Happiness Report 2023 shows.
When you exceed your mental, emotional, and physical capacity at work, you have no reserve left for your personal life.
That may explain why only 58% of doctors reported feeling somewhat or very happy outside of work, compared with 84% who felt that way before the pandemic.
Doctors need to prioritize their own well-being, “That’s not being selfish, that’s doing what’s necessary to stay well and be able to take care of patients. If doctors don’t take care of themselves, no one else will.”
The author recommends that doctors regularly interact with relatives, friends, trusted colleagues, or clergy to help maintain their well-being, rather than waiting until a crisis to reach out.

A good coach, mentor or counselor can help physicians gain enough self-awareness to handle their emotions and gain more clarity about what changes need to be made.

Prioritise Well-Being

Physicians need to prioritise their mental, emotional, and physical health to maintain their ability to care for patients effectively. Self-care is crucial to avoid burnout and ensure a fulfilling personal life.

Seek Support

Regular interactions with relatives, friends, colleagues, or clergy are essential for maintaining well-being. Engaging with a coach, mentor, or counsellor can help physicians gain self-awareness, manage emotions, and identify necessary changes for a balanced life.
